Basic Rock Climbing Course in Stockholm, Sweden

Do you want to start climbing outdoors but don’t really know where to begin? Then this course is for you.

During two days you will learn the fundamentals of outdoor rock climbing together with our experienced instructors. We will go through everything you need to feel confident at the crag – from climbing technique, equipment and belaying to building anchors and climbing independently outdoors with a partner.

The course is suitable both for complete beginners and for those who already climb indoors and want to take the next step onto real rock.

When you join our beginner course, you also get access to a free refresher session in the spring before the outdoor climbing season starts. This gives you the opportunity to refresh your skills, practise important techniques and feel confident before heading out climbing on your own.

After the course you will have the knowledge and support to continue developing as a climber – whether your goal is summer evenings at your local crag, climbing trips in the sun or bigger mountain adventures in the future.

Welcome to the start of your climbing journey.

Why choose Mountain Guide Travel?

We have been running climbing courses since 1993 and have helped thousands of people discover climbing.

Our instructors are certified mountain guides (UIAGM/IFMGA) and/or certified rock climbing instructors through UIAA/the Swedish Climbing Federation.

All our instructors have extensive experience in both climbing and teaching. Over the years, we have coached climbers all the way from their first day on rock to big goals such as El Capitan and alpine adventures around the world.

With us, you don’t just learn the techniques – you get a safe and inspiring introduction to the climbing world.

Course duration

Two full days, approximately 7–8 hours per day, starting at 09:00.

Courses are usually held Saturday–Sunday, but we also offer selected weekday courses. See available dates for more information.

What will you learn?

During the course we cover:

  • basic climbing technique and movement on rock
  • climbing equipment and how to use it
  • knots and rope handling
  • belaying techniques and communication between climber and belayer
  • partner checks and safe climbing routines
  • how to build safe top-rope anchors outdoors
  • rappelling/abseiling techniques
  • how to find and choose routes using a climbing guidebook/topo
  • risk awareness and safety at the crag
  • tips on how to continue climbing after the course

The goal is that after the course you will feel confident continuing your climbing journey independently with a climbing partner.

Swedish “Grönt kort” included

The course includes training and the opportunity to take the test for the Swedish “Grönt kort” (green card).

The green card is a climbing certification required for top-rope climbing at most indoor climbing gyms in Sweden.

Already have your green card? Perfect! Many of our participants come from indoor climbing. In that case, this course becomes your next step where you learn the additional skills needed for outdoor climbing – such as anchors, rappelling and safety at the crag.

This course is for anyone who wants to take their first step into the climbing world and learn how to climb outdoors safely.

It is perfect for you if you:

We spend the full days outside and adapt the course depending on conditions.

Location

Our open courses are mainly held at Häggsta, one of Stockholm’s most classic climbing areas.

For private groups we can also arrange courses in other locations, for example Gothenburg and Bohuslän.

After the course – continue your climbing journey

The beginner course is the first step in your climbing journey.

We know that getting out climbing without an instructor after a course can sometimes feel like a big step. That’s why a free refresher session is included for everyone who has completed our beginner course.

Every spring, before the climbing season starts, we invite previous participants to join our instructors and practise important skills such as:

  • building top-rope anchors
  • belaying
  • rappelling/abseiling
  • equipment and safety at the crag

It is also a great opportunity to meet other climbers and find new climbing partners.

When you are ready, you can continue developing with:

  • sport climbing courses
  • traditional climbing courses
  • climbing trips
  • alpine courses

We love following our participants from their first day on rock to bigger adventures in the mountains.
