Ski Touring in Morocco – An Unforgettable Journey in the Atlas Mountains

Imagine gliding down snow-covered slopes with the dramatic silhouettes of the Atlas Mountains as your backdrop. The crisp, dry air carries the sound of your skis through the untouched snow, while the sun's rays warm your face. In the distance, you catch sight of mountain villages where Berber people have lived for centuries, and as you lift your gaze, you see the majestic peaks of North Africa's highest mountain range. Beyond the horizon, Africa’s desert shimmers. This unique ski touring trip combines alpine adventure with the fascinating Moroccan culture and is led by an experienced IFMGA-certified mountain guide, assisted by a local guide.

Prerequisites
This trip is designed for skiers with prior ski touring experience and good physical fitness. You should be comfortable using climbing skins, managing varying snow conditions, and undertaking longer ascents at high altitude.
A good preparatory trip would be a Haute Route in the Alps, such as Chamonix-Zermatt or a similar route.

Weekly Itinerary
The following itinerary represents a typical week. Due to weather and snow conditions, adjustments may be made.

Day 1: Travel Day – Arrival in Marrakech
Traveling from Europe to Marrakech, Morocco, is shorter than one might think when considering Africa. It takes about 3 hours from Paris to Marrakech.
If several of us arrive at the same time, we can share a taxi to the hotel. Once everyone is gathered, we go over the trip's itinerary and conduct a final equipment check. We finish the day with a traditional Moroccan dinner in the bustling Medina, the heart of Marrakech.

Day 2: Transfer to Imlil (1,740 m) and Acclimatization Tour
After breakfast, we leave Marrakech and travel to the small mountain village of Imlil, located at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Upon arrival, we have lunch and check into our rooms. In the afternoon, we take a short acclimatization tour in the surroundings to adjust to the altitude and explore the area.

Day 3: Ascent to Refuge du Toubkal (3,207 m)
The day begins with breakfast at the hotel. Then, we leave our skis, boots, and other equipment with the mules that will carry everything up to Refuge du Toubkal. This allows us to hike with light backpacks containing only a small water bottle and an extra jacket.
We begin our ascent to Toubkal Refuge, which will serve as our base for the coming days. The climb is 1,400 vertical meters, but the trail is well-maintained.
The hike takes us through spectacular valleys, passing small houses where we can buy drinks or enjoy a cup of sweet tea for extra energy before reaching our accommodation for the night.
Upon arrival at Refuge du Toubkal, we have a late lunch. Those with extra energy can take a short ski touring trip and enjoy a few turns, or simply relax and prepare for the next day's adventure.

Day 4: Ski Touring from Refuge du Toubkal
After a night at 3,200 m, we set out for a ski tour to one of the nearby passes around Refuge du Toubkal. Depending on the snow and weather conditions, we ascend to around 3,900 m and ski straight back to the refuge.

Day 5: Summit of Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m) – North Africa’s Highest Peak
Early in the morning, we begin our ascent to Jebel Toubkal. With our skis, the reward is doubled – breathtaking views from the summit followed by an incredible ski descent. After a fantastic run down, we return to our refuge.
After an extra lunch at the refuge, we start our descent back to Imlil. A warm shower has never felt so good.

Day 6: Ski Touring or Alternative Activities
This is an extra touring day. If the snow is good and the group is eager, we can take another ski tour to one of the peaks. Alternatively, mountain bikes are available for rent for a cycling adventure. The group and guide will decide on the best option together.

Day 7: Return to Marrakech – Culture and Relaxation
We leave our hotel in Imlil and take a taxi back to Marrakech. Now, you have time to explore this colorful city. Visiting markets or relaxing in a traditional hammam are great options before we conclude the trip with a final group dinner.

Day 8: Departure
After an unforgettable week in the Atlas Mountains, we say goodbye to Morocco and head home with memories for a lifetime.

Small Groups
We take only 4-6 skiers per guide on these trips.
On some weeks, there may be two guides with separate groups touring simultaneously. The guides work together but are not bound to follow the exact same route, allowing for different ski descents.
