Ski touring weekend in the land of the midnight sun - Riksgränsen, Abisko and Narvik

Midnight sun, we are above the polar circle and the sun never sets. Evenings and nights it colours the mountains in red, pink, purple and a thousand different shades in between. The snow stays on these peaks until June and allows a long skiing season.

The great thing about ski touring in this area is that you can move with the snow and the weather. Quite often the sky is clear on one side and it snows on the other, we are therefore flexible and can chose our route accordingly.

Ski touring is a wonderful combination of beautiful views, the stillness of being in the mountains and the action of downhill skiing. It can all be adjusted to your dream, we can go far and steep and chose long rolling downhill runs or the other way around. As mountain guides it is our job to always choose the most suitable tour.

We can find our own path, away from all the others. In this area it is not even a challenge, it would be more surprising if we met other people along our way.

Being able to move with the snow and weather conditions is strength in this area and transportations are always included on these tours. This gives us the possibility to alter the tours and ads to the feeling of freedom.

The best season
The best season to visit this area for ski touring is march through may. If you wish for the sun to be above the horizon around the clock you have to wait until may 13th but the month before is just as beautiful as the sun comes up and caresses the horizon.

The group meets their guide for planning of the tour in the morning and soon you get going by minivan or train to the mountain offering the best conditions for a nice tour on this day.

Uphill you go by using your own muscle power on ski touring skis with skins. If you are a snowboarder you use snowshoes and carry your snowboard on your back. We stop along the way to have coffee and lunch and after a well done job moving uphill you get your reward in a nice long run downhill. The degree of difficulty and how time consuming the tour will be is adjusted according to the condition and requests of the group and. 

Equipment

The idea is to explore and experience the winter mountains in this fantastic area with climbing skins under the skis. You don't need to think about safety equipment for avalanches etc. You can borrow it from your mountain guide.

Included in the trip

• Ski touring & guiding by certified guides for 4 days

• Loan of avalanche safety equipment (shovel, probe and transceiver)

• Transport throughout the week by minibus

• Road charges when we go on tours in Norway

• Accommodation for 4 nights at Hotel Riksgränsen in a skier's double room with breakfast at the hotel

Single rooms or apartments can be booked subject to an additional cost, if you/you wish

Your accommodation is booked from Wednesday, which is your travel day and arrival day. Then you can check in from 3 p.m

Then the journey starts on Thursday at 8.30 and you are ski touring for 4 days, Thursday to Sunday.

Sunday is travel day home and you must check out no later than 11 a.m. on Sunday

If you are missing something, you can rent Skis, Boots, Poles, Bindings and Trail Skins in the Sports Shop at Hotel Riksgränsen.

• Ski cramopns that fits your skis / bindings

• Skins for your skis

• Telescopic poles, with large basket

• Ski boots for ski touring

• Ski backpack, approximately 35 litres

• Clothing for skiing (shell jacket and trousers)

• Extra baselayer 2 pieces (to be able to change if you get really sweaty)

• Extra warm jacket, for example a thin down jacket, or extra fleece, to put on when resting or if it gets really cold (small and handy to keep in your backpack)

• Extra gloves

• Sunglasses

• Ski goggles

• Sun protection

• Thermos

The price applies to individuals/groups of 4-6 people. We reserve a minimum of 4 participants to complete the tour, alternatively the tour will depart at a higher price.
