Want to experience the Northern Lights in a true Arctic environment?
Join us for a unique ski touring week in the Riksgränsen area, where the goal is to combine outstanding skiing with the chance to experience the Northern Lights from the mountains. During one of the most magical times of the year, we travel through a winter landscape of snow-covered peaks, vast valleys, and crystal-clear Arctic days – while the darkness still provides excellent opportunities to watch the aurora dance across the sky.
This trip is designed to maximize the chances of experiencing both great skiing and the Northern Lights. Together with our certified mountain guides, we adapt each day’s plans according to weather, snow conditions, and aurora forecasts to create the best possible experience – both day and night.
Here, you'll experience spectacular ski touring, Arctic landscapes, great food, comfortable accommodation, and memorable evenings beneath a star-filled sky. Some days we may finish our tour in the twilight as the northern lights begin to emerge above the mountains. On other days, we set out early to experience the unique stillness of the mountains before sunrise.
Even when the northern lights don't appear, skiing in the dark is an experience in itself. Moving through the Arctic night by headlamp, beneath a sky full of stars and surrounded by silent snow-covered peaks, is something most people will never forget.
The trip takes place from late February to early March and is offered for private groups.
The Location
Riksgränsen is located far north of the Arctic Circle, in the heart of the Arctic mountains on the border between Sweden and Norway. The area is renowned for its spectacular scenery, reliable snow conditions, and minimal light pollution – factors that together create excellent opportunities for experiencing the Northern Lights.
Here, the mountains rise directly from the valleys, offering a wide variety of ski touring options, while the dark winter sky provides the perfect backdrop for watching the aurora dance above the peaks. The combination of high-alpine terrain, a stable winter climate, and its northern location makes Riksgränsen one of Scandinavia’s most attractive destinations for those looking to combine ski touring with authentic Arctic experiences.
With our own minibus, we have the freedom to explore the Norwegian side of the border as well. This gives us access to an even greater variety of ski tours and the flexibility to choose the terrain and conditions that offer the best skiing each day.
Season
This trip takes place during late February and early March, a period that often offers the ideal combination of ski touring and Northern Lights viewing. At this time of year, the days are long enough for great ski tours, while the nights remain dark enough to provide excellent opportunities to see the aurora. The combination of winter landscapes, reliable snow conditions, and the chance to watch the Northern Lights dance above the mountains makes this one of the most magical times of year to visit Riksgränsen.
Program
The trip follows a flexible itinerary where we adapt each day's tours according to weather, snow conditions, and Northern Lights forecasts. The goal is to combine great ski touring, proper recovery, and memorable experiences in a spectacular Arctic mountain environment.
One of the days includes a snowcat excursion to Låktatjåkko Mountain Lodge. There, we’ll enjoy their famous waffles before heading out on skis in the surrounding mountains, with the hope of experiencing the Northern Lights above the peaks.
During the week, we also include a rest day from ski touring. You may choose to relax in the hotel spa or join a snowmobile safari to experience the Arctic landscape from a different perspective. For those who can’t get enough skiing, there is also the option of spending a day in the Riksgränsen ski area.
